Urban Moshav is a non-profit development partner for Jewish cohousing whose services include guided visioning, site search and feasibility, group formation, project management and much more.
Urban Moshav is currently facilitating the formation of Berkeley Moshav, a 20-25 household Jewish cohousing community in Berkeley, CA. They intend to be diverse in age, income, family structure, and Jewish observance and to have a kosher community kitchen.
Why Jewish Cohousing?
“Community is the core of both cohousing and Jewish life, and my intention is to marry these two forms of community. Jewish life can be a integral component of the “social glue” created in cohousing communities: Shared rituals, traditions, and celebrations can help residents form even tighter bonds, as people come together not only to have more community but also to nurture an ancestral and life affirming tradition. Conversely, living in cohousing can create a more nurturing cradle for sustaining and passing along Jewish rituals and traditions, for raising children who are connected to these, and for celebrating life together. I want to create such environments, where Jewish tradition enhances the community and the community nurtures Jewish life.”
LGBT Senior Cohousing Communities with Residential Care
Dan is the founder and Managing Director of eQuality Health Services, a company focused on providing guidance and assistance to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community in finding supportive retirement, assisted living, CCRC, and nursing home options; in addition to building LGBT focused senior housing communities.
He served for 9 years as the single federal Medicare Beneficiary Ombudsman with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. As a member of the Senior Executive Service and the Ombudsman, Dan issued annual reports to the Secretary of Health and Human Services and to Congress on his suggested improvements to the Medicare program.
Dan is partnering with CoHousing Solutions to build LGBT senior focused cohousing inspired developments in targeted cities. eQuality Health Services will also develop a benchmarking tool to evaluate senior communities’ policies and practices related to the inclusion of LGBT seniors, friends, and employees.
Dan splits his time between Provincetown, MA and Delray Beach, FL with his husband Scott.
He’s currently considering sites on Cape Cod in Massachusetts and along the southeast coast of Florida.
Building Momentum for Cohousing in Marin
John is the burning soul behind North Bay Cohousing.
His background is in Architecture and Construction Management, but his career evolved into project management, and working with teams. His experience covers the bases: programming, master planning, concept development, project and program management. He’s been both in the office scheming, and on-site, doing. He’s currently the Regional Director of Planning for Veteran Affairs in the Western U.S.
John’s first project is Novato Cohousing Now, located in Marin County, CA. The group has a target site and kicked off their credibility phase with a Getting-It-Built Workshop facilitated by CoHousing Solutions on March 12 & 13, 2016.
They are an intentional, intergenerational community committed to sustainability and supporting one another. Currently a group of 10 individuals, couples and families, they’re inviting others to grow with them to finally bring cohousing to Marin County and the North Bay.

Joel is the burning soul behind Ecovillagers Cooperative, a developer, membership network, and professional services provider for ecovillages based on retrofit cohousing design, mixed use, and shared-equity co-ownership. This Real Estate Investment Co-op invests exclusively in Community Land Co-ops created by its own members.
In Joel’s words, an ecovillage is:

Developing Cohousing Through Community Land Trusts
Darryl has studied and practiced the art of natural building for over 20 years. Co-founder of Natural Building in Community, a three-month, hands on building intensive and apprenticeship, he’s led aspiring students and building professionals through the history of building with materials gathered directly from the site. He also helped establish and lived at Emerald Earth Sanctuary, an intentional community based on permaculture principles: care for the earth, care for the people, return of the surplus.
Through his work as a builder, design consultant, community member and educator, Darryl is able to merge his passions for fine craft, ecological stewardship, relationship to place and social justice, all while getting in the mud and building homes.
He’s employed as Construction Project Manager for Fair Oaks EcoHousing, a cohousing neighborhood 18 miles east of Sacramento seeking additional members. He’s working to establish a community land trust in Sebastopol for small communities, as well as pursuing opportunities to develop cohousing in Northern California.
Currently focused on seeking sites in Petaluma and Sonoma County, CA.
Launching Urban Cohousing to Soften City Life
500 Communities comes at a perfect time as Amy prepares to launch the first cohousing in Illinois. She hopes to facilitate the development of both intergenerational and senior communities.
She’s been at the forefront of several major building projects, dealing with developers, the Wrigley Field ballpark, four aldermen, the city, the gay political establishment and many community organizations.
Her work in home staging brings her in close contact with the way people want to live. She believes Chicagoans, already used to small living spaces, will find cohousing an attractive benefit to condominium life. Chicago is a city of apartments, and she hope to turn some of the smaller buildings into cohousing.
She’s driven to find an antidote to the challenges of building community in large cities. Though vibrant, these areas can be lonely, and she believes life in cohousing can ease some of the physical and emotional difficulties of city life.
