McCamant & Durrett Architects

cohousing1Kathryn McCamant and her husband and co-principal, Charles Durrett, introduced cohousing to North America with their book, Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves, in 1988. Since then, McCamant & Durrett Architects has designed, developed and consulted on over 50 cohousing communities.

Under the auspices of The CoHousing Company (which is a division of the architecture firm), McCamant & Durrett for several years provided cohousing development services. These development services were eventually split off, to create CoHousing Partners, LLC in 2006.

McCamant & Durrett adapted a participatory process from Denmark that builds the community not brick by brick, but decision by decision. With a commitment to sustainable design, the firm helps clients integrate resource and energy efficiencies that make sense for their project. The firm works to create communities that have a strong sense of place, beauty, and that contribute to the surrounding environment.

Communities they have designed have received numerous awards including the National Association of Home Builders’ “Best Smart Growth Community Design,” HUD’s “Building Innovation for Home Ownership,” the Institute of Social Innovation in London’s “Best Social Innovation,” and the United Nation’s World Habitat Award.

Kathryn McCamant is a founding principal of CoHousing Solutions (formerly CoHousing Partners) and serves as the firm’s President. CoHousing Solutions relies on McCamant & Durrett for architecture design.
